Removing files of a certain age

Stanislav KhromovStanislav Khromov

Scenario: you just uncompressed that huge archive into your home directory and now your home dir is littered with files. Oops!

Here’s a quick and easy way to remove files that were created/modified in the past ten minutes:

find /root -mindepth 1 -cmin -10 -exec rm -rf {} \;

Warning
Be very careful with this! If you run it in your home dir you might accidentally delete config files that have recently been modified. Either backup your whole home directory first, or check which files will be affected by removing the -exec flag and piping the output to a file, example:

find /root -mindepth 1 -cmin -10 -print > will-be-affected.log
